How do I learn Azerbaijani grammar well?
Work through it in order: morphology first (parts of speech and suffixes), then syntax (word combinations, sentence members, sentence types). Write your own example for every rule, analyze sentences from the texts you read, and keep a notebook of the rules you get wrong. Short daily practice beats cramming the night before a test.
Guide: understanding school topics with AI →How do I prepare for the Azerbaijani language exam at DİM?
In the Azerbaijani sector, Azerbaijani is the language of instruction in the final (buraxılış) exam, with 30 tasks: 10 on language rules and 20 on two texts. In the same sector it is also a weighted subject (coefficient 1.5) in the Group III admission exam, while Russian-sector students take Azerbaijani separately as the state language. Take the topic list from the DİM program at dim.gov.az, work through past tasks, and practise reading texts and writing short answers, not only rules; OrujovAI's exam practice has DİM-format Azerbaijani tests that show your weak topics.
DİM-format practice tests →What are the parts of speech in Azerbaijani?
School grammar counts 11 parts of speech in Azerbaijani. Six are main ones: noun (isim), adjective (sifət), numeral (say), pronoun (əvəzlik), verb (feil) and adverb (zərf); five are auxiliary: postposition (qoşma), conjunction (bağlayıcı), particle (ədat), modal words (modal sözlər) and interjection (nida), although some grammars treat the interjection as a group of its own. Main parts of speech have both lexical and grammatical meaning and can be sentence members, while auxiliary ones carry only grammatical meaning and usually cannot.
What is a noun (isim) in Azerbaijani?
An isim names a thing, living being, event or idea and answers kim? (who?), nə? (what?) or hara? (what place?): müəllim, kitab, Bakı, sevinc. Nouns decline through six cases and take the plural suffix -lar/-lər, possessive suffixes and predicative endings. There is no grammatical gender, so endings depend only on vowel harmony.
How do I identify an adjective (sifət) in Azerbaijani?
A sifət describes a quality of a noun and answers necə?, nə cür? (what kind?) or hansı? (which?): yaşıl yarpaq (green leaf), ağıllı uşaq (clever child). Put the word before a noun and ask the question: if it describes the noun, it is an adjective. Many adjectives are formed with -lı/-li, -sız/-siz or -kı/-ki (dadlı, dadsız, axşamkı), and they never change for number or case: yaşıl yarpaqlar.
What is a verb (feil) in Azerbaijani?
A feil expresses an action or state and answers questions like nə etdi?, nə edir?, nə edəcək? (what did, does, will someone do?): yazmaq, oxuyur, gəldi. Verbs mark tense, person, number, negation (with -ma/-mə: yazmadı), voice and mood, all through suffixes added in a fixed order. In a sentence the verb usually comes last and works as the predicate.
What is the difference between feili sifət and feili bağlama?
A feili sifət is a participle: it describes a noun and answers hansı? (which?), as in oxunan kitab (the book being read) or yazılmış məktub (a written letter), with suffixes such as -an/-ən, -mış, -dıq, -acaq, -ar, -ası, -maz. A feili bağlama is a converb (verbal adverb): it shows how, when or why an action happens and works as an adverbial, as in gülərək danışdı (spoke laughing) or evə çatanda zəng etdi (called on getting home), with -ıb, -araq, -anda, -dıqda, -madan, -dıqca and others. In short, the participle attaches to a noun, the converb to a verb.
What is a məsdər (verbal noun) in Azerbaijani?
The məsdər is the dictionary form of the verb, made with -maq/-mək: oxumaq (to read), yazmaq (to write), gülmək (to laugh). It behaves like a verb (it has a negative form: yazmamaq) and like a noun, taking case and possessive endings, as in oxumağı sevirəm (I love reading) or gəlməyin vacibdir (your coming is important). Dictionaries list Azerbaijani verbs in this form.
What is an adverb (zərf) in Azerbaijani?
A zərf describes how, when, where or to what extent an action happens: tez (quickly), yavaş-yavaş (slowly), sabah (tomorrow), irəli (forward), az (a little). The school program sorts them by meaning into four groups: adverbs of manner, time, place and quantity. To tell it from an adjective, look at what the word attaches to: yaxşı uşaq (a good child, sifət) but yaxşı oxuyur (studies well, zərf).
What is a pronoun (əvəzlik) in Azerbaijani?
An əvəzlik stands in for a noun, adjective, numeral or adverb. The school program has five groups: personal (mən, sən, o, biz, siz, onlar), demonstrative (bu, o, həmin, belə), interrogative (kim, nə, hansı, neçə), indefinite (kimsə, nəsə, biri) and determinative pronouns (hər, bütün, hamı), and some grammars list öz separately as a reflexive pronoun. Note that o means he, she or it and also that, since Azerbaijani has no grammatical gender.
What is the difference between postpositions, conjunctions and particles in Azerbaijani?
All three are auxiliary words with different jobs. A postposition (qoşma) follows a word and links it to another, like an English preposition placed after the noun: dostum ilə (with my friend), vətən üçün (for the homeland), səhərə qədər (until morning); a conjunction (bağlayıcı) joins words and clauses: və, amma, çünki, ki; a particle (ədat) adds emphasis or nuance: hətta, axı, məgər and the question particle -mı/-mi. The same word can change roles: in “Ancaq sən bilirsən” ancaq is a particle meaning “only”, while in “Gəldim, ancaq onu görmədim” it is a conjunction meaning “but”.
What are the parts of a sentence in Azerbaijani?
There are five sentence members: two main ones, the subject (mübtəda) and the predicate (xəbər), and three secondary ones, the object (tamamlıq), the attribute (təyin) and the adverbial (zərflik). In school analysis the subject is underlined once, the predicate twice, the object with a dashed line, the attribute with a wavy line and the adverbial with a dash-dot line. The usual order is subject first and predicate last, with attributes before the noun they describe.
How do I find the subject and predicate in Azerbaijani?
Find the predicate first: it tells what the subject does or is, and it usually stands at the end of the sentence (gəldi, müəllimdir). Then ask kim? (who?) or nə? (what?) about the predicate: the word in the nominative case that answers is the subject. In “Səhər tezdən Aynur məktəbə getdi” (Aynur went to school early in the morning) the predicate is getdi and the subject is Aynur.
How do I tell the object, attribute and adverbial apart?
Use the question. An object names a thing and answers case questions such as kimi?, nəyi?, kimə?, nədən?, kimlə?; an attribute describes a noun, stands before it and answers hansı?, necə?, neçə?, kimin?; an adverbial shows how, when, where, why or how much an action happens. Necə? asked about a noun gives an attribute and asked about a verb gives an adverbial: in “Kiçik qardaşım dünən kitabı maraqla oxudu” (My little brother read the book with interest yesterday), kiçik is an attribute, kitabı an object, and dünən and maraqla are adverbials.
What are homogeneous parts of a sentence?
Homogeneous members answer the same question, relate to the same word and have the same function: “Bazardan alma, armud və nar aldıq” (We bought apples, pears and pomegranates at the market). They are linked by listing intonation (commas) or by conjunctions such as və, ilə, amma, həm... həm, nə... nə, and there is no comma before a single və. A generalizing word placed before them is followed by a colon, and one placed after them is preceded by a dash.
What is a compound sentence in Azerbaijani?
A compound sentence (tabesiz mürəkkəb cümlə) is made of two or more equal clauses, none of which depends on another. The clauses are joined by intonation alone or by coordinating conjunctions such as və, amma, lakin, ancaq, yaxud, həm... həm, gah... gah: “Yağış kəsdi, günəş çıxdı” (The rain stopped, the sun came out). Commas usually separate the clauses, with a semicolon, colon or dash in more complex cases.
How do I identify a complex sentence in Azerbaijani?
A complex sentence (tabeli mürəkkəb cümlə) has a main clause (baş cümlə) and a subordinate clause (budaq cümlə) that explains or replaces a member of the main one. Ask a question from the main clause to the other: in “Bilirəm ki, sən gələcəksən” (I know that you will come), the part answering “nəyi bilirəm?” (what do I know?) is an object clause. The clauses are linked by ki, çünki, əgər, the conditional suffix -sa/-sə, relative pairs (kim ki... o; harada ki... orada) or intonation alone.
Ask Live Tutor for a spoken lesson on this →Where do commas go in Azerbaijani?
Commas go between homogeneous members without a conjunction, before repeated conjunctions (həm..., həm də...), before amma, lakin, ancaq and çünki, and between the clauses of compound and complex sentences. Introductory words (məncə, əlbəttə, birincisi, deməli) and forms of address are set off with commas. One rule surprises learners: with the conjunction ki the comma goes after it, not before: “Dedi ki, sabah gələcək” (He said he would come tomorrow).
How is punctuation used in Azerbaijani?
A statement ends with a full stop, a question with a question mark, and an exclamation or a strong command with an exclamation mark. Inside a sentence, commas, semicolons, colons and dashes separate parts; quotation marks enclose direct speech, quotations and titles, brackets add explanations, and an ellipsis marks an unfinished thought. When the author's words come first in direct speech, they are followed by a colon: Müəllim dedi: “Sabah yoxlama yazı olacaq.” (The teacher said: “There will be a test tomorrow.”)
How do I check the correct spelling of an Azerbaijani word?
The spelling dictionary is the authority, because many words are written differently from how they sound: yarpaq is pronounced [yarpax] and çörək is pronounced [çörəy]. Checking the root and whether the suffix follows vowel harmony (kitablar, evlər) also helps. Spell checkers and AI chats can flag errors, but in doubtful cases the dictionary has the final word.
Where can I find an Azerbaijani spelling dictionary?
The main reference is the Spelling Dictionary of the Azerbaijani Language (Azərbaycan dilinin orfoqrafiya lüğəti) from the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences; its 2013 edition, with more than 110,000 words, can be searched on the korpus.azerbaycandili.az electronic dictionary portal. DİM also lists its own Spelling and Pronunciation Dictionary (Orfoqrafiya, orfoepiya lüğəti, 2024) in the reading list of its final exam program. Printed editions are in libraries and bookshops, and whichever you use, check the year of the edition.
What does Azerbaijani phonetics study?
Phonetics studies the sound system: speech sounds and how they are made and classified, syllables, stress and intonation. The Azerbaijani alphabet has 32 letters, 9 vowels (a, ı, o, u, e, ə, i, ö, ü) and 23 consonants, and vowels are grouped as back or front and rounded or unrounded. The key topic is vowel harmony (ahəng qanunu): a suffix vowel adapts to the last vowel of the root (kitab-lar, ev-lər), and stress usually falls on the last syllable.
What is lexicology (leksika)?
Leksika is the vocabulary of a language, and lexicology is the branch of linguistics that studies it. It covers literal and figurative meaning, words with several meanings, synonyms, antonyms and homonyms, loanwords, archaic words, neologisms, dialect words and terms. Idioms (phraseology) are usually taught alongside it.
What are synonyms, antonyms and homonyms?
Synonyms are words with close meanings: gözəl, qəşəng, göyçək (beautiful). Antonyms have opposite meanings: isti and soyuq (hot and cold), gəlmək and getmək (to come and to go). Homonyms are spelled and pronounced the same but their meanings are unrelated, like yaz (spring) and yaz (write!), or çay (tea) and çay (river), which separates them from one word with several related meanings.
Live Tutor: free lesson on homonyms (in Azerbaijani) →What are idioms (frazeoloji birləşmələr) in Azerbaijani?
Frazeoloji birləşmələr are fixed expressions whose meaning is not the sum of their words: göz qoymaq (to keep an eye on), qulaq asmaq (to listen), ağzı qulaqlarının dibində olmaq (to grin from ear to ear), dilə tutmaq (to coax). In sentence analysis an idiom counts as one member, and its words cannot be swapped for others. Literal translation rarely works, so check the meaning in a phraseological dictionary.
How do I analyze word combinations in Azerbaijani?
First find the head word and the dependent word: the question goes from the head to the dependent (necə ev? – daş ev, a stone house). Then classify by the head: a noun head makes a nominal combination, a verb head a verbal one (kitab oxumaq, to read a book). For nominal attributive combinations, name the type (I: daş ev, II: ev qapısı, III: evin qapısı) and the kind of link: agreement (uzlaşma), government (idarə) or adjunction (yanaşma).
How do I find the main idea of a text?
First identify the topic (what the text is about), then what the author wants to say about it: that is the main idea. It often appears in the title, the first or last paragraph, or a summarizing sentence, but sometimes you have to infer it from the whole text. In tests, the right option covers the whole text, not one detail of it.
How do I analyze a text?
Read it twice, once for the overall meaning and once with notes. Then identify the topic, main idea, text type (narration, description, argument), style (literary, journalistic, scientific, official, conversational) and structure (introduction, body, conclusion, paragraphs). In a literary text also point out the devices and the author's attitude, and back every claim with an example from the text.
How do I answer text questions in the final exam?
In the language-of-instruction paper, 20 of the 30 tasks are about two texts, and the open tasks that need a written answer number 10 in grade 11 and 4 in grade 9. Skim the questions first, then read the text carefully and mark where the answers are. Base each written answer on the text rather than on memory, write it as a complete, correctly spelled sentence, and check the current exam model and sample tasks on dim.gov.az.
Guide: preparing for the final exam →How can a Russian-sector student learn Azerbaijani?
Russian-sector students take Azerbaijani as the state language in a separate exam, and a pass (“məqbul”) is required for university admission. The usual stumbling blocks are vowel harmony, the order of suffixes and the verb coming last, so it helps to learn them by contrast with Russian: there is no gender, and cases and postpositions do the work of prepositions. Read and listen to a little Azerbaijani every day, write new words in sentences and speak with classmates; in OrujovAI Chat you can ask for a rule explained in Russian with examples in Azerbaijani.
Get a rule explained in Chat →How do I prepare for literature in DİM?
Literature is the third subject of the admission (block) exam in the DT subgroup of Group III, with a coefficient of 1, and it is not part of the final exam. The literature paper has 30 tasks: 22 multiple-choice, 5 open tasks with a coded answer and 3 written tasks based on a text or situation. Check which works and topics can come up in that year's DİM admission program, read the works in the textbook, keep short notes on authors' lives, genres, verse meters and literary devices, and practise with DİM's task collections; the Russian sector has its own literature program.
Guide: DİM preparation with AI →What literary devices are there?
The main figurative devices (bədii təsvir vasitələri) are epithet, simile (təşbeh), metaphor (istiarə), personification (təşxis), hyperbole (mübaliğə), litotes, metonymy, irony (kinayə), symbol and allegory. There are also expressive devices such as repetition (təkrir), rhetorical question and address, antithesis (təzad) and inversion. In an analysis, naming the device is not enough: explain the effect it creates.
What are epithet, simile and metaphor?
An epithet is a figurative attribute that highlights an artistic quality: qızıl payız (golden autumn), polad iradə (steel will). A simile openly compares one thing to another with words like kimi, tək, sanki, elə bil (like, as if): “Gözləri ulduz kimi parlayırdı” (Her eyes shone like stars). A metaphor is a hidden comparison without those words, transferring one thing's name or action to another: “Bağda lalələr yanırdı” (Tulips were burning in the garden).
What is the difference between syllabic (heca) meter and aruz?
Heca is the native syllabic meter of folk poetry: every line has the same number of syllables, 7 in a bayatı, 8 in a gəraylı and 11 in a qoşma, with fixed pauses such as 4+4+3 or 6+5. Aruz came from Arabic and Persian poetry and is built on set patterns of long and short syllables. The ghazals, qasidas, rubais and masnavis of Fuzuli, Nasimi and Nizami are written in aruz, and free verse also spread in the 20th century.
What is a ghazal?
A ghazal (qəzəl) is a lyric genre of classical Eastern poetry, written in aruz and usually 5 to 12 couplets (beyts) long. Both lines of the first couplet rhyme, and after that only the second line of each couplet repeats the rhyme (aa, ba, ca, da), often followed by a refrain word (rədif). The first couplet is the mətlə and the last the məqtə, where the poet names his pen name (təxəllüs); in Azerbaijani literature the ghazal is tied above all to Fuzuli.
What is a rubai?
A rubai is a four-line poem (two couplets) in aruz, usually rhymed aaba and sometimes aaaa. In a small space it expresses a complete philosophical thought about life, love or fate, often with the key idea landing in the last line. In Azerbaijani literature Mahsati Ganjavi is one of the earliest known authors of rubais, and Omar Khayyam's are famous worldwide.
What is a goshma in ashug poetry?
The goshma (qoşma) is the most widespread form of ashug poetry: 11-syllable lines (split 6+5 or 4+4+3) in four-line stanzas, usually 3 to 5 of them. The first stanza rhymes abab or xaxa and the rest cccb, and in the last stanza the ashug names himself (the möhürbənd). Ashug Alasgar and Khasta Gasim are known for their goshmas, and Molla Panah Vagif wrote many as well.
What is the main idea of the Book of Dede Korkut?
The Book of Dede Korkut is the heroic epic of the Oghuz Turks, and its main idea is love of the homeland, the unity of the Oghuz people and their defence against enemies. Its stories (boy) celebrate courage, loyalty, respect for parents and family, the high standing of women and the victory of good over evil, while the sage Dede Korkut appears at the end of each story to bless the heroes and give advice. The Dresden manuscript has an introduction and 12 stories, among them the tales of Bugach Khan, son of Dirse Khan, of how Basat killed Tepegoz, and of Deli Domrul.
Which characters appear in the Koroglu epic?
The hero is Koroglu, whose real name is Rovshan: after Hasan Khan has his father Ali kishi blinded, he takes revenge and gathers brave outlaws (dəlilər) at the Chanlibel stronghold to fight oppressors. Other key figures are his wise wife Nigar khanim, his adopted son Eyvaz, the warriors Damirchioglu and Deli Hasan, the tyrant Hasan Khan and Koroglu's horse Qirat. The epic's main idea is the people's struggle against tyranny, courage and justice.
What are Nizami Ganjavi's main works?
Nizami Ganjavi's (12th century) main legacy is the Khamsa (Quintet), five long poems: The Treasury of Mysteries, Khosrow and Shirin, Leyli and Majnun, The Seven Beauties and the Iskandarnama. They deal with the just ruler, human dignity, love, work and knowledge. Lyric poems, including ghazals, qasidas and rubais, also survive.
What is Leyli and Majnun about?
It is the story of Qeys and Leyli, who fall in love at school: Leyli's family keeps them apart, and Qeys, driven mad by grief, wanders the desert and becomes known as Majnun (“possessed”). Leyli is married against her will to Ibn Salam, stays faithful to her love and dies, and Majnun dies at her grave. Nizami (1188) and Fuzuli both told the story as a long poem, and Uzeyir Hajibeyli's 1908 opera of the same name is based on Fuzuli's version.
What should I know about Fuzuli's work?
Muhammad Fuzuli (16th century) wrote in Azerbaijani, Persian and Arabic and is known above all for his ghazals in Azerbaijani. His main works are the poem Leyli and Majnun, his Azerbaijani divan, the complaint letter Shikayatnama and the poem Bang and Bada (Hashish and Wine). Love, both human and divine, suffering, humanism and protest against injustice are at the centre of his work.
Who was Molla Panah Vagif?
Molla Panah Vagif was an 18th-century poet and the vizier of Ibrahim Khalil Khan of Karabakh. He is regarded as the founder of realism in Azerbaijani poetry because he brought everyday folk language, real human beauty and a love of life into verse, writing mostly goshmas, garaylis and mukhammas. He was killed in 1797, and his last years are the subject of Samad Vurgun's drama Vagif.
Which comedies did Mirza Fatali Akhundzade write?
Between 1850 and 1855 Akhundzade wrote six comedies: Molla Ibrahim Khalil the Alchemist, Monsieur Jordan the Botanist and Dervish Mastali Shah the Famous Sorcerer, The Vizier of the Lankaran Khanate, The Bear That Caught the Robber, The Adventures of a Miser (Haji Gara) and The Lawyers. These plays earned him the title of founder of Azerbaijani drama. The comedies mock ignorance, superstition, greed, bribery and unjust courts.
What is the main idea of Haji Gara?
The main idea of Haji Gara (The Adventures of a Miser) is to expose miserliness and greed for money. The rich merchant Haji Gara puts money above everything, keeps his family in want and, hoping for profit, sets off with the bankrupt Heydar bey to smuggle goods across the Araz. Alongside him, Akhundzade also mocks the beys who think work beneath them and look for easy money.
What is Mirza Alakbar Sabir's satire about?
Sabir (1862–1911) attacked ignorance, superstition, hostility to science and education, the lack of rights for women, the exploitation of working people, hypocrisy and indifference. His poems appeared mostly in the magazine Molla Nasraddin and were later collected in the book Hophopnama. His signature method is to speak in the voice of the person he criticizes, so the character exposes his own vices, which makes the laughter sharper.
What is Jalil Mammadguluzadeh's “Events in Danabash Village” about?
The novella, written in 1894, opens in the village of Danabash with the disappearance of the donkey that Uncle Mammadhasan was going to ride on a pilgrimage to Karbala. It turns out that the local strongman Khudayar bey took and sold it to buy sugar and tea as a gift for the qazi, so that he could marry the widow Zeynab, who refuses him, and to break her resistance he has her son Valiqulu arrested on his complaint. Behind the bitter humour, the author shows lawlessness, bribery, ignorance and the helplessness of ordinary people before arbitrary power.
Which works did Huseyn Javid write?
Huseyn Javid (1882–1941) was a leading figure of Azerbaijani romanticism and a writer of tragedies in verse. His main plays are Ana (Mother), Maral, Sheikh Sanan, Sheyda, Iblis, Peygambar (The Prophet), Topal Teymur (Lame Timur), Siyavush and Khayyam, and he also wrote lyric poetry. His work explores good and evil, faith, love and beauty; he was arrested in the 1937 repressions and died in exile.
What is Samad Vurgun's drama Vagif about?
Written in 1937, this verse drama tells of the poet and vizier Molla Panah Vagif and Karabakh's resistance to the invasion of Agha Mohammad Shah Qajar at the end of the 18th century. Its central conflict sets Vagif, who defends his people's freedom, against the cruel conqueror Qajar, and even when imprisoned and facing death Vagif does not bow. Other key figures are Eldar, leader of the peasants who rise against the khan's oppression and Qajar's invasion, Vagif's friend the poet Vidadi, Ibrahim Khalil Khan of Karabakh and Vagif's wife Khuraman.
What is the idea of Arshin Mal Alan?
The central idea of Uzeyir Hajibeyli's 1913 musical comedy is young people's right to choose whom they marry. Custom did not let a groom see his bride before the wedding, so the wealthy young Asgar disguises himself as a travelling cloth seller (arşın mal alan) and so meets Gulchohra, the daughter of Soltan bey. The comedy pokes fun at old customs and ends happily with several weddings.
How do I write a character analysis?
In the introduction say who the character is and what role they play, then in the body reveal their nature through actions, speech, relationships with others and the author's attitude. Support each trait with an episode or a short quotation, and show whether the character changes over the story. In the conclusion state what human type or idea they embody and what you think of them.
How do I write a summary of a literary work?
Read the whole work and list the main events in order: exposition, rising action, climax and resolution. Write in your own words, briefly and in sequence, leaving out minor details and your personal opinion unless the task asks for it. Finally, check whether someone who hasn't read the book could tell from your text who did what and how it ends.
Guide: literature with AI →Is it okay to read only the summary of a book?
A summary is useful for revision or as a map before reading, but it doesn't replace the book. It loses the language, the characters' inner world, the literary devices and the atmosphere, and exams also include tasks built on an excerpt from the text. If time is short, read at least the key scenes and the textbook excerpts in the original.
Can AI analyze a literary work?
Yes, AI can explain a work's theme, idea, characters and devices, answer your questions and quiz you. But especially with less widely known Azerbaijani works it can mix up events and names or even invent a quotation that isn't in the text. Give it the text itself, by pasting an excerpt or sending a photo of the page, and compare its analysis with your textbook; OrujovAI Chat does this in Azerbaijani, Russian or English.
Analyze an excerpt in Chat →Does AI summarize books correctly?
AI usually gets the overall plot of well-known works right but can slip on details such as names, the order of events or the ending, especially when it doesn't have the text in front of it. The risk is higher for works that are rare online, including many Azerbaijani ones. Use AI summaries for revision only, ask it to work from text you provide, and check key facts against the book.
How do I keep a reading journal?
Give each book a page: title, author, start and finish dates, main characters and a one- or two-paragraph summary. Add a quotation you liked, new words, a scene that moved you and your own opinion of the book. Short notes after each chapter make writing an essay or analysis much easier later.
How do I answer open literature questions?
First work out what the question wants: an explanation, a comparison, a character sketch or a literary device. Open with your main point, then prove it with a specific moment or a short quotation from the work, and use literary terms correctly. In DİM's written tasks your answer must rest on the given text or situation, so keep it short, precise and in full sentences, without general filler.
