AI in Azerbaijani: how well it understands, speaks and corrects the language

Many AI chatbots now write natural Azerbaijani, understand text typed without ə, ş or ç, fix spelling and read answers aloud, but they still slip on dialects and rare terms and sometimes mix in Turkish words. OrujovAI, made in Baku, was built for Azerbaijani first, with voice input, read aloud and a Live Tutor that teaches out loud in Azerbaijani.

Which AI understands Azerbaijani, and how to test it

Large multilingual chatbots now read and write Azerbaijani, and some products are built around the language. The differences are in the details: does the answer sound native or translated, are ə, ı, ğ and ş in place, do Turkish words sneak in?

Skip the rankings and give any assistant the same short test:

  • Ask an everyday question in Azerbaijani: the reply should be in Azerbaijani, not Turkish or Russian.
  • Ask for a formal ərizə (application letter) to a school director: weak Azerbaijani shows first in formal writing.
  • Ask what the proverb “Dəmiri isti-isti döyərlər” means. A good answer explains the idea instead of translating word by word.
  • Watch for Turkish forms like “şimdi” for “indi” or “çok” for “çox”, and for word-for-word calques from Russian.

Typing without ə, ş and ç: does AI still understand?

On a phone most people type “bu meseleni hell et”, not “bu məsələni həll et”. A good assistant reads it as Azerbaijani, works out the meaning from context and replies with the correct letters.

Context can mislead: without its letters, “seher” is either səhər (morning) or şəhər (city), and “ac” is ac (hungry) or aç (open). When one word carries the meaning, such as a name, term or date, type it properly or add context.

OrujovAI understands Azerbaijani typed without special letters and answers with the correct spelling, so you can write the way you text.

  • To clean up a rushed message, ask: “Bu mətndə ə, ş, ç, ğ, ı, ö, ü hərflərini bərpa et, başqa heç nəyi dəyişmə” (restore the letters, change nothing else).
  • Add the Azerbaijani keyboard in your phone settings: it has its own ə key.

Spelling, punctuation and Cyrillic to Latin

AI is a fast proofreader for Azerbaijani: missing letters, ı and i mix-ups, wrong suffixes, commas, words written together or apart. Ask for a correction, not a rewrite, and review every change so you learn from it.

Older documents and books are in Azerbaijani Cyrillic: the law restoring the Latin alphabet passed in December 1991, and the switch was completed in 2001. When a text uses the real Azerbaijani Cyrillic letters, AI converts it well: Азәрбајҹан becomes Azərbaycan and гыз becomes qız (Г stands for Q, not G). Texts typed on a Russian keyboard sometimes swapped Ә, Ҹ or Ј for look-alikes, so check names and such spots by hand.

  1. Paste the text and ask: “Orfoqrafiya və durğu işarəsi səhvlərini düzəlt, üslubu dəyişmə” (fix spelling and punctuation, keep my style).
  2. Ask for a list of changes with reasons, and accept or reject each.
  3. Check doubtful words in the Azerbaijani spelling dictionary (orfoqrafiya lüğəti), not in a single AI answer.

Voice: talking to AI and hearing Azerbaijani read aloud

Speech to text in Azerbaijani works on many phones and browsers, handy for dictating drafts and notes. Noise, fast speech, accents, names and numbers lower accuracy, so reread before sending.

Text to speech has improved too: older voices sounded robotic, or Azerbaijani text was read by a Turkish voice, while natural Azerbaijani voices exist now. Listen for a clear ə, correct stress and numbers read the way a person says them. Hearing your essay read aloud catches mistakes your eyes miss.

In OrujovAI, the chat microphone lets you dictate (in browsers that support speech recognition), every answer has a Read aloud button that uses a natural Azerbaijani voice when the app is set to Azerbaijani, and Voice conversation mode lets you talk and hear the reply out loud. Live Tutor teaches lessons out loud with native Azerbaijani voices; its free example lessons replay for anyone. “Read a page” (photograph a page and a voice reads it line by line) is part of Pro and Ultra, which are not on sale yet.

Learning Azerbaijani with AI, for Russian speakers

Pupils in Russian-sector schools study Azerbaijani as the state language (dövlət dili), and DİM publishes a separate graduation-exam programme for it. AI makes a patient practice partner that talks at your level and explains grammar in Russian.

Ə is an open sound between Russian а and э, like the a in “cat”; practise the pair əl (hand) and el (people). Most other hard sounds have close Russian matches: ı is near ы, x near х, ş near ш, ç near ч and c near дж.

  1. Ask: “Mənimlə sadə azərbaycanca danış, çətin sözləri rus dilinə tərcümə et” (talk to me in simple Azerbaijani, translate hard words into Russian).
  2. Practise 15 minutes a day on school topics and ask it to explain the rule behind every mistake.
  3. A few days later, ask for a short quiz on the new words.
  4. Before an exam, read the current programme on dim.gov.az: AI practice tasks are training, not official tests.

Where AI still makes mistakes in Azerbaijani

Even strong assistants slip. Check these weak spots:

An AI-written official letter or exam essay is a draft: have someone who knows the language check it. Use AI to learn, not to cheat. That goes for every chatbot, OrujovAI included.

  • Dialects and casual speech are understood less reliably than literary Azerbaijani.
  • Rare legal, medical and technical terms can come back as Turkish, Russian or invented words.
  • Names, places, dates and numbers go wrong most often in voice input.
  • Azerbaijani in the Arabic script, used by Azerbaijanis in Iran, is handled far less well than the Latin script.

Questions

Which AI understands Azerbaijani?

Most large chatbots now write Azerbaijani, with varying quality. OrujovAI, made in Baku, was built for Azerbaijani first: natural answers, text without ə, ş or ç understood, answers read aloud.

Can AI understand Azerbaijani typed without special letters?

Yes. Good assistants read “bu meseleni hell et” as Azerbaijani and reply with the correct letters. Ambiguous words like “seher” (səhər or şəhər) need context.

Is there natural-sounding Azerbaijani text to speech?

Yes, natural Azerbaijani voices exist now. In OrujovAI every chat answer has a Read aloud button (a natural Azerbaijani voice when the app is set to Azerbaijani), and Live Tutor teaches lessons out loud with native Azerbaijani voices.

Can AI check Azerbaijani spelling and grammar?

Yes. Ask it to fix errors without changing your style and to list every change; check doubtful words in the spelling dictionary.

Is there an Azerbaijani language model?

Large multilingual models handle Azerbaijani. OrujovAI does not claim a model of its own trained from scratch: what is made in Baku is the product, with its Azerbaijani handling, voice features and study tools. The Free plan needs no card.
